PEORIA (HOI) -- A local foundation is hosting a virtual event on August 14 to educate people about blood clotting disorders and raise money for treatment and research.
It's the "Run, Walk or Trot to Stop Blood Clots" virtual 5K, hosted by the Deveraux Hubbard II Foundation - founded in memory of its namesake, who died in 2013 because of a blood clot. He was a sophomore in high school.
Hubbard's father, Deveraux Hubbard I, founded the group, which he said aims to teach people about basic signs and symptoms of blood clotting disorders.
Hubbard said the best way to avoid blood clots is with a healthy lifestyle, so they organized the event to promote just that.
"We've interacted - as a result of the event - with other families who have lost family members or other families who have been impacted by bleeding and clotting disorders," Hubbard said. "The community that is being developed around this issue has really been an encouragement to us."
The group is also planning to host a special reception at Peoria's Blood Clotting Disorders Institute the morning of the 14th from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
There, they will hand out information and present the institute with a $5000 donation.
