White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson misses second straight start - Chicago Sun-Times

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Shortstop Tim Anderson was out of the White Sox lineup a second straight day Sunday with leg soreness.

“His legs are still barking,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We don’t want to push him. If it was October he’d be in there. It’s more preventative, get rid of some of that fatigue and soreness. Hopefully have him in there tomorrow.”

La Russa said Anderson is dealing with normal wear and tear.

“He’s not hurt, he’s just sore,” La Russa said.

Danny Mendick started at shortstop for the second straight game.

Anderson hit a tying home run in the ninth inning, then drove in the go-ahead run with a single and scored another run in the Sox’ 7-5 win over the Rays Friday. He also scored from first on a double and sprinted home from third on two groundouts.

“Those two sprints to the plate .... talked to the trainer last night and said let’s just give him another day,” La Russa said.

Grandal won’t return on road trip

Catcher Yasmani Grandal’s rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte will extend through at least the road trip, which concludes Thursday in Toronto.

“We know the importance of Yasmani, and we’re following it closely,” La Russa said.

Because it’s a knee injury Grandal is coming back from and because of the taxing nature of his position, “he may need extra time to get ready, as opposed to a position player, because he’s got that double duty,” La Russa said.

La Russa wouldn’t commit to a return in the home series against the Cubs next weekend “or Monday afterwards.”

“I just know you can’t push him because you need him. Mentally he’s going to be ready, but physically you cannot push him. It would be a big mistake to set him back once he got here. We have to be able to say, ‘He’s ready to go, and when he comes, he stays.’ ”

Outfielder Adam Engel (left shoulder inflammation) won’t return on this trip as well, La Russa said.

Zavala’s offense

Seby Zavala will bat ninth in the lineup on most nights he catches, so whatever offense he can supply is a bonus.

Zavala hit his fifth homer Saturday and is 12-for-49 (.245) with 13 RBI over his last 18 games.

“It’s getting better every day,” Zavala said. “I had a first rough couple of weeks, but you have to get the job done here, and having that pressure is good. It really makes you focus to have your best at-bats day in and day out.”

Zavala’s top priority is catching, “helping the pitching staff with the goal of getting outs and being as efficient as possible, saving as many pitches as we can,” he said.

Pitchers gave favorable reviews to Zavala’s pitch calling when he came up after Yermin Mercedes was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.

“I don’t ask, ‘How do you guys like me back there,’ but I ask, ‘Is there anything I can do better?’ And there’s constant communication between us,” Zavala said. “I’m trying to learn them and every day and we have to keep adapting to the hitters that are adapting to us.”

Zack Collins was the starting catcher Sunday, catching Reynaldo Lopez. Zavala said he’s not worried about what his role would be and what the postseason would entail when Grandal returns.

“No, I just want to play and show what I can do,” he said. “That’s all I’ve ever asked, and I’m finally getting it.”
