BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A season of opportunity lies ahead of the CSU Bakersfield women's golf team. The Roadrunners are putting the final preparations together to begin the 2021-22 season with a new head coach, a refreshed roster, and the chance to leave a lasting impression on the CSUB golf program.

"I'm excited for this group," said Tiffanie Yabut, who is in her first season as Head Coach of the `Runners. "I have really put an emphasis the past few weeks on building a team culture of hard work, competitiveness, and excellence. That starts with how we do the little things."

Yabut detailed her squad's mentality heading into the season: "With only having five [members of the team], I have really tried to simulate tournament and pressure situations as much as possible…We did Team USA vs. Team Internationals and that really got the competitive juices flowing…It was fun to see the grit that they had and how competitive they got."

The `Runner women's golf team has benefited from several aged veterans leading the charge over the past few seasons. The majority of that group has since graduated and moved on, but Yabut said the 2021-22 squad will look to fifth-year senior Kaleigh Irey to set the tone.

"I'm excited for Kaleigh. She has been a great leader for this team, on and off the course. We spent a lot of time talking about the team dynamic and where it's been and where we want it to be. We have worked on her mental toughness and her short game and she has had some really competitive rounds."

Rounding out Bakersfield's returners are third-year sophomore Gillian Galicia and second-year freshman Christy Mae SabanYabut went on to describe the strengths of both women, which happen to be the same: Galicia and Saban are talented ball strikers and confident putters who will be vital parts of the 2021-22 squad.

"I have spent a lot of time one-on-one with each of them," Yabut said. "Putting them in those competitions and those pressure situations has helped them rise to the occasion."

Moving on to the final two members of the team, Bakersfield welcomed a pair of Division I transfers in Serbian Jefi Dordevic and Indonesian Aufa Rachmadya. The pair both bring ample experience from their time at Chattanooga and Wichita State, respectively, and Yabut said she expects them to be major factors in CSUB's scoring.

"I think having two international players has been good for the team dynamic. Their competitive nature has really helped push the rest of the team to rise to the challenge and be competitive every single day. Aufa is very competitive, but she is also playful and her sense of humor is good for the group. Jefi is very competitive as well and likes to work really hard."

With the roster set and these five `Runners ready to kick off the 2021-22 season, Yabut will drive the team to southern Utah this weekend to prepare for the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. Bakersfield will join 16 other teams including fellow Big West Conference members Cal Poly and CSUN for 54 holes of golf, Sept. 13-14.

"This team is definitely excited to make our debut," Yabut said. "I think we're ready and we're going to put a big focus on our mental gameplan…If each person takes care of their process and takes it one shot at a time, we're going to get the job done and have a good first tournament."

The `Runners will kick off their season on Monday with tee times starting at 6:45 a.m. (PT). Fans can follow CSUB in action this week via the live stats page on GolfStat.com. Due to the rugged area, reception is limited in Springville, Utah, so scores will only be updated every nine holes.
