NORMAL (Heart of Illinois ABC) – Planners support a proposed truck stop and RV park in north Normal, but they’re not in favor of allowing builders to put up a sign that would soar above Interstate 55.
Normal Planning Commissioners Thursday evening voted unanimously for rezoning 30.5 acres of farmland to build Loves Truck Stop and RV park at the northwest corner of I-55 and North Main Street.
The commission also unanimously endorsed the developers’ subdivision plan, but voted 3-1 against putting up a Loves sign 200 feet high. Commissioners want the sign to comply with the town’s current code that limits the sign’s height to 75 feet.
Town staffers are willing to make an exception because a tall sign is needed to attract motorists traveling on the interstate.
Elected leaders on the Normal Town Council will have the final say on the plans, including the sign’s height at the September 20 council meeting.
