A day after Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters that left tackle Duane Brown is "ready to go" for the team's season opener against the Colts on Sunday, the Pro Bowl offensive lineman cashed in on a reworked contract. According to ESPN, Seattle has adjusted Brown's current deal, which expires after the 2021 season, to pay more up front and add incentives that could increase the tackle's earnings to $12 million. Brown, who had been attending but not fully participating in practice in an effort to land a new deal, is now officially set to start as Russell Wilson's blind-side blocker in Week 1.
A five-time Pro Bowler who's been with Seattle since 2017, Brown signed a three-year, $34.5 million extension with the team in 2018. This offseason, due a $10 million salary and $1 million signing bonus in 2021, he sought either a pay raise or new long-term deal. His reworked deal pays a $7 million signing bonus and $4 million salary, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, meaning the Seahawks didn't immediately add new money to his contract but rather guaranteed more of it. Additional playing time and Pro Bowl incentives can push his total haul to $12 million.
Brown is still scheduled to hit free agency in 2022, when he'll enter his age-37 season. The former Texans standout, who spent more than nine years in Houston to start his career, is the most accomplished member of Seattle's offensive line.
