What’s one of the top things to do while visiting Kailua-Kona on the Big Island? A romantic sunset cruise? A walk through the cool forests of Hualalai? How about shaking hands with an octopus?

That’s right, the Kanaloa Octopus Farm at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is one of the most popular spots on the coast.

Jacob Conroy started the farm five years ago with the goal of figuring out how to raise Hawaiian cephalopods through the entirety of their life cycle. Conroy spoke with The Conversation about how it’s going.

He also set the record straight for us on the most important question... the plural of octopus is octopuses.

This interview aired on The Conversation on Oct. 5, 2021.
