LACEY, Wash. – Throughout the first half, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team stayed right with #25 Hawaii Pacific. Then in the second half, the Sharks took off on their way to claiming the 85-61 win Friday in a neutral site game that was played on the campus of Saint Martin's.

Meadow Aragon and Kaelin Williams-Kennedy paced the Wolves with 12 points apiece. Ana McClave, in her first collegiate game, tallied 11 points. Aragon just missed a double-double with eight rebounds. Facing her former team, Makenna Gambee scored seven points for the Wolves.

"I thought we played a solid first half. We were focused and executed on defense for the most part," head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "Meadow got going early and Ana was a great spark off the bench for us."

WOU played a tough first half and gave HPU all they could handle. The Wolves held a lead in parts of the first quarter and then stretched the lead out to eight in the second quarter before the Sharks took a two-point lead into halftime.

The Sharks then outscored WOU 49-27 over the final 20 minutes to surge ahead for the victory.

"HPU is a tough matchup and they hit their stride in the second half. We didn't do well with the ball screens and they were able to turn the corner and find shooters," Howard-Carpenter added.

Another key stat ended up being turnovers and points off turnovers as 21 WOU turnovers led to a 26-5 points off turnovers advantage for the Sharks.

"We have to value the ball more and not give up so many points off turnovers," Howard-Carpenter said. "I think that and free throws were the difference in the game."

Aragon opened the scoring nearly a minute in on a layup. Hawaii Pacific answered back with a 6-0 run to open up a 6-2 lead. After the Sharks pushed in front by five, WOU came back to regain the lead late in the opening quarter. A three-pointer by Kylee Arzner helped start a 7-0 run. Aragon then finished off the run with a jumper and layup for the 15-13 lead for the Wolves. It was back-and-forth the rest of the quarter that left the teams tied at 18 after the first 10 minutes.

Ana McClave got the Wolves going in the second quarter with a jumper just over 30 seconds in. Williams-Kennedy added a layup on the next trip down to move the lead out to four. Following back-to-back three-pointers by Ana McClave and Williams-Kennedy, the Wolves had their largest lead of the game of eight, 28-20, two minutes into the second quarter.

Another Arzner three near the midway point of the quarter kept WOU with a six-point lead before the Sharks finished the half on a 11-3 run to take a 36-34 lead.

Following Ana McClave's big start to the game, sister Cali McClave began the second half strong for the Wolves when she hit a three-pointer to bring WOU to within one a minute into the third quarter.

After HPU had the lead out to six, WOU got back to within four a couple of times on baskets from Williams-Kennedy and Caitlin Wheeler. The Sharks stretched the lead into double-digits, but the Wolves made another run before the end of the quarter getting the deficit down to seven on a pair of free throws by Ana McClave. HPU connected on a layup and three-pointer over the final minute of the quarter for an 59-47 lead heading to the fourth.

Gambee picked up a steal and layup and then added a free throw during the early parts of the fourth quarter to cut the lead back down to nine. After getting as close as eight on two free throws by Tresai McCarver, the Sharks closed the game on a 22-6 run to secure the victory.

WOU went 22-52 (41.5) from the field, 5-16 (31.3) from three and 12-22 (54.5) at the foul line. HPU went 29-65 (44.6) from the field, 8-21 (38.1) from three and 19-24 (79.2) from the foul line. WOU held the advantage on bench points (22-5), while the teams tied in second chance points each with seven. HPU held the edge in points in the paint (34-30) and fastbreak points (18-9).

Tavia Rowell led four Sharks in double-figures with 24 points and added nine rebounds. Avery Cargill tallied 18 points, Amy Baum with 16 points and Julia Razo with 13 points. Baum almost made it a double-double as well with nine rebounds.

WOU won't have to travel far for their next game when they will face Willamette in Salem this Sunday with game time set for 2 p.m.
