Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Columbus man a variety of charges, including kidnapping, having a weapon under disability, carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault, related to an investigation that began after a traffic stop early Sunday morning on U.S. Route 33.
Passenger Dewaughn Morgan, 24, was arrested on the charges in the 12:25 a.m. traffic stop near East Liberty, where deputies recovered a 9mm pistol in the glove box. He was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
The defendant was traveling in a vehicle with a 20-year-old female driver from Sidney and also a 14-year-old female passenger.
Deputies initiated the stop after being unable to read the rear license plate of the vehicle. During the stop, deputies noticed that the front seat passenger, Morgan, making a number of furtive movements.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies said the defendant told deputies about the expired registration for the vehicle and he also admitted to using marijuana. They said he continued to speak for the female driver and that he seemed overly nervous.
Morgan also provided deputies with a false name and claiming that he didn’t know his Social Security number.
Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, which yielded the 9mm pistol. Deputies said the serial numbers on the gun had been tampered with and there also was a strand of blonde hair stuck to the pistol.
Initially, both Morgan and the 20-year-old woman denied ownership of the firearm and both were arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and transported to the jail. The 14-year-old also was released to her mother.
While at the jail, the woman spoke with deputies more freely about what had occurred, informing them that she had met the defendant through social media. She said he had contacted her that day wanting a ride from a bar in Columbus.
After picking him up, she and the defendant were in an argument and he allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and held it against her head. He then demanded that he drive the vehicle and he drove them to his friend’s residence around Columbus.
After stopping at the residence, the woman said Morgan was holding the gun and told her and the 14-year-old girl to get back into the vehicle. They left the area, supposedly en route to Lima, with Morgan continuing to make threats.
During the encounter that day, the woman said the defendant struck her with the pistol approximately 10 times in the head and back. She reportedly refused medical treatment when offered by deputies.
LCSO deputies and detectives were able to work with Lima Police Department detectives and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers to identify Morgan, since he would not provide his actual identity.
Investigation continues, with reports sent to the Columbus Police Department regarding the bar incident and to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office.
