WEST CALN — A police officer conducting a routine traffic stop here fired a single shot at a motorist after the woman reportedly tried to flee the scene early Wednesday morning, according to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office.

The woman was not injured in the shooting, which is now being investigated by the Chester County Detective’s Office. She was found to possess a handgun in the car, however, and was arrested on a variety of charges in the case.

The woman, identified in a news release from the D.A.’s Office as Takeshia Landry, 41, of Columbus, Ohio, is now being held in Chester County Prison on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday at District Court in Honey Brook.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the D.A.’s Office gave the following account of the incident:

On Nov. 10 at approximately 12:30 a.m., a uniformed township police officer in a marked police vehicle initiated a traffic stop after he observed the driver of a white Chrysler sedan make an illegal left turn on a red traffic light in the area of Route 10 and West King’s Highway, near the village of Compass in West Caln, a rural township on the western edge of the county.

Once the vehicle stopped, the police officer requested license and registration information from the driver repeatedly, but she would not comply. The driver, Landry, was then asked to exit the vehicle but allegedly refused. The police officer — who was not identified — opened the driver’s side car door and attempted to remove Landry from the car.

She then allegedly fled from the scene in her car. The officer then fired one round from his department-issued firearm as she sped away.

It appeared that the bullet struck the window frame and shattered the window of the driver’s side rear passenger window. Landry, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not injured.

After a short chase south on Route 10, Landry stopped her car in the 600 block of Octorara Trail. The officer pulled her out of the vehicle and she was taken into custody.

A Colt revolver firearm was recovered from the driver’s purse after a search warrant was executed, according to the release. Landry allegedly does not possess a license to carry a firearm.

She was charged with firearms not to be carried without a license, recklessly endangering another person, flight to avoid apprehension, fleeing and eluding, and other related charges. She was arraigned Wednesday evening by Magisterial District Judge John Bailey of West Whiteland, who set bail.

According to the D.A.’s Office protocol, the Chester County Detectives will be the independent agency reviewing this officer-involved shooting. After reviewing the results of the investigation, District Attorney Deb Ryan will make the final decision regarding whether the shooting was justified and issue written findings.
