FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — It's that time of year again for the start of The City of Fort Wayne's annual leaf collection.

Director of Public Works Shan Gunawardena joined Street Commissioner Brian Shimkus on Monday to kick off the collections by the Fort Wayne Street Department in over 400 city neighborhoods.

This year’s leaf pickup will run through Dec. 17, but the schedule may shift depending on weather and the volume of leaves, officials say.

Last year, crews say they collected 25,895 leaf bags and hauled 5,170 truckloads of leaves.

Residents can visit this website for updates on the schedule that are given daily before 3 p.m. The updates will include what neighborhood the crews will be working in the following day.

Or, residents can get the updates by calling 260-427-2603.

Officials also urge parents to remind children not to play in leaf piles near the street for safety.

Those who would like the flexibility of having leaves collected at their convenience may use the biodegradable bag system and are asked to call 311 to schedule a pick-up. The bags need to be placed at the curb prior to calling.

Bagged leaf collection will run through the end of 2021, weather permitting.

In March 2022, the Street Department will announce two additional weeks for bagged leaf collection.
