In the wake of the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Jameis Winston, the New Orleans Saints will turn to the quarterback who relieved Winston last Sunday -- not the one who opened the season as the team's backup quarterback after competing with Winston throughout the preseason.
According to a report from NFL Network, the Saints will start Trevor Siemian against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Siemian entered in place of Winston during the team's victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8, completing 15 of 29 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown. Prior to signing with New Orleans, Siemian spent time with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. He was briefly Denver's starter in 2016 and 2017, going 13-11 while throwing 30 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
Siemian was on the active roster as Winston's backup because Taysom Hill was out for his second consecutive game after suffering a concussion during the team's Week 5 victory over the Washington Football Team. He returned to a full practice on Thursday for the first time since suffering the injury.
Last season, it was Hill and not Winston who started in place of an injured Drew Brees, which led many to believe that he would be favored over Winston in the team's preseason quarterback competition. Instead, Winston won the job and Hill retained his role as a hybrid backup quarterback and tight end/wide receiver who played a number of snaps in specific packages throughout the game.
