Despite the recommendation from the PIAA that schools begin practicing for winter sports today, most of the schools in the area are delaying, with December 7th the most likely day to start. With a 15-practice minimum before a team can play a game, that would push back the start of the season to December 22nd.
Indiana and Heritage Conference schools, with the exception of Penns Manor, Blairsville and Northern Cambria, will delay the start of their winter sports.
Citing his work demands as Ligonier Borough police chief, John Berger has resigned as coach of the Ligonier Valley boys’ basketball team. Berger will be replaced by girls’ coach Tim Gustin, with athletic director Wesley Siko coaching the girls on an interim basis. Siko tells the Tribune-Review that he hopes to have a new girls’ coach in place in time for school board approval on December 2nd. The school is currently in full remote learning, including suspension of all athletic activities, so it will not be until December that the first winter sports practices can begin, which will delay the start of their seasons.
