The delta variant of the novel coronavirus is continuing to surge throughout the country — and it looks like your normal cloth face coverings won’t cut it anymore.
Which masks should you not wear?
It looks like experts are speaking out against bandanas, cloth masks and neck gaiters when it comes to the delta variant.
Michael Osterholm, director for the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN this week that people should upgrade from their cloth masks and bandanas to more heavy-duty masks — like N95s and K-N95s.
- “We need to talk about better masking. We need to talk about N-95 respirators, which would do a lot for both people who are not yet vaccinated or not previously infected,” Osterholm told CNN. “Protecting them as well as keeping others who might become infected having been vaccinated from breathing out the virus.”
Osterholm said he has had issues with how masking has gone in the United States because people have not taken the best masks — like N95s — as seriously as cloth masks, according to The Hill.
- “You know I wish we could get rid of the term masking because, in fact, it implies that anything you put in front of your face works, and if I could just add a nuance to that which hopefully doesn’t add more confusion is we know today that many of the face cloth coverings that people wear are not very effective in reducing any of the virus movement in or out,” Osterholm said.
In a similar light, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” back in July that we may want to consider N95 or K-N95 masks, too.
- “So it’s not more airborne and it’s not more likely to be permeable to a mask. So a mask can still be helpful,” Gottlieb said on “Face the Nation” Sunday. “I think, though, if you’re going to consider wearing a mask, the quality of the mask does matter. So if you can get your hands on a KN95 mask or an N95 mask, that’s going to afford you a lot more protection.”
Should you wear a mask if you’re fully vaccinated?
Dr. Todd Vento, an infectious diseases doctor at Intermountain Healthcare, told reporters Thursday that fully vaccinated people should mask up right now because of the delta variant.
- “It doesn’t take the place of common sense. It doesn’t take the place of masks and social distancing, We still have to do those. We have to do those even more now because we’ve got a much more aggressive virus that goes between people much more easily. Masks do work to prevent that,” Vento said.
