SAGINAW, MI — A Saginaw man has been charged with murder in the July shooting death of a younger man inside his home.

The night of Sunday, Aug. 15, Saginaw County sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Tittabawassee Road and Cardinal Square Boulevard in Kochville Township, said Undersheriff Mike Gomez. The vehicle was being driven without a license plate, Gomez added.

Riding as a passenger in the vehicle was 27-year-old Darius D. Holmes, the undersheriff said. Holmes had been wanted on a murder warrant since July 20, related to the July killing of 23-year-old Danquarious J. Murrell.

Holmes exited the vehicle and took off running, Gomez said. Police eventually arrested him in the parking lot of Denny’s, 2435 Tittabawassee Road, a distance of about 0.3 miles from where the traffic stop occurred.

Holmes was unarmed at the time of his arrest, Gomez added. Police had to use a fingerprints scanner to identify Holmes, as he would not divulge his name, the undersheriff said.

Holmes on Monday, Aug. 16, appeared before Saginaw County District Judge A.T. Frank for arraignment on charges of open murder, first-degree home invasion, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, plus five counts of felony firearm. Open murder contains first- and second-degree murder, both of which are life offenses, though a first-degree conviction prohibits the possibility of parole.

Frank denied granting Holmes bond.

The charges stem from police at about 7:30 a.m. on July 8 responding to a shooting at Murrell’s residence in the 2700 block of Beechwood Avenue on Saginaw’s East Side. They arrived to find Murrell suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Emergency responders pronounced Murrell dead at the scene.

Prosecutors have said Murrell and Holmes knew of each other but have not elaborated on a potential motive. They said at least one other person was in the residence at the time of the shooting.

They have not said what evidence led police to develop Holmes as a suspect or what evidence prompted authorities to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Murrell was described in his obituary as “a respectful, caring, loving and fun person. He enjoyed basketball, dancing, traveling, partying and having fun. He spent most of his time with family and he truly enjoyed his Aunt TruDonna and her kids.”

Murrell was “a family man to the core. He loved his aunts and uncles and shared a special bond with all his cousins,” his obituary continues. “He touched the heart of everyone he encountered in some significant way. Our beloved father, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and friend will truly be missed.”

Murrell was predeceased by his father and two brothers. He is survived by his mother, stepfather, and a son.

Holmes is to appear for a preliminary examination at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 1.
