MARSHALL — Several area girls basketball teams competed in the first day of the Borch’s Holiday Classic tournament on Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University.
WWG 53, DB 40
Westbrook-Walnut Grove defeated Dawson-Boyd 53-40 in the opening game.
WWG got out to an early start, going up 4-0 before a pair of free throws by Abby Wiggins made it 6-0 with 10:55 left in the first half. DB had an answer, though, getting a layup by Taylen Jorgenson to stop an eight-minute scoreless streak before a jumper by Chelsie Husby and a 3-pointer by Kate Dahl gave DB a 7-6 lead with 7:50 left in the frame. Both teams then traded points the rest of the half, as Allison Estling connected on a pair of free throws to maintain DB’s one-point lead at 11-10 with 4:07 left before Amelia Sikel and Wiggins got back-to-back layups to give WWG a 14-13 advantage going into the locker rooms.
The tight play continued to start the second half, as Estling got a layup to give DB a 20-18 lead before Isabel Klumper connected on a 3-pointer to put WWG in front at 22-21 with 14:50 left. WWG kept attacking, as Sikel got a layup before Kelsey DeSmith got a 3-point play and Wiggins connected on a layup to give them a double-digit lead at 33-23 with 12:35 left.
More points were traded over the next few minutes, but WWG continued to maintain a double-digit lead, as Addeson Jenniges connected on a 3-pointer to make it 45-31 with 6:25 left. WWG would lead by as many as 16 at 53-37 en route to the 53-40 final.
Klumper led WWG with 13 points while Wiggins added 12 and Sikel had 11. No other WWG stats were available at press time.
Estling led DB with 13 points while Dahl added 12. Ayiana Hastad led in rebounds with seven while Husby led in steals with four.
WWG (4-3) will face SWC at home next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. while DB (0-8) will face RTR at home next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Canby 54, St. Clair 50
The Canby girls basketball team defeated St. Clair 54-50 on Tuesday.
St. Clair got a strong start, scoring the first seven points before a layup by Maya Wente got Canby on the board and stopped a nearly seven-minute scoreless streak. St. Clair would push its lead to 12-4 on a 3-pointer with 10:40 left in the first half, but the Lancers answered with a jumper by Kortney Leppke, a layup by Aidyn Bruns and a pair of free throws from Ryann Hansen to draw the deficit to one at 15-14 with 5:40 left. Both teams would trade points the rest of the half, with a layup by Wente keeping Canby to within one at 21-20 with 1:45 left, but St. Clair would take a 27-23 lead going into the locker rooms.
Canby would start the second half in strong fashion, as a layup by Wente highlighted a 9-0 run to give the Lancers a 32-27 lead with 14:50 left. The Lancers continued to attack, with a Wente layup giving Canby a double-digit advantage at 41-31 with 11:15 left, but St. Clair had an answer, drawing to within single digits at 49-41 with 6:30 left before a pair of layups made it a four-point game at 51-47 with 3:45 left. St. Clair would draw to within two at 52-50 with 1:52 left, but couldn’t get any closer en route to the 54-50 final.
Bruns and Wente led Canby with 16 points each while Leppke added 14. Bruns and Wente also led in rebounds with 15 each while Hansen added 10 and Leppke, Hansen and Lacie DeVos led in assists with three each.
Canby (5-3) will face Wabasso today in tournament play at 3:30 p.m.

WINDOM — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team fell to St. James Area 120-113 in triple overtime on Tuesday in the Windom tournament.
Trevor Smith led TMB with 44 points while Tony Nelson added 24, Jake Turner had 17 and Noah Swenhaugen had 13. Turner led in rebounds with 11 while Christian Wendland led in assists with 10.
TMB (5-2) will face Windom Area today on the road in tournament play.
