ARMOUR SQUARE — A driver hit and killed a 55-year-old bicyclist Saturday after running a stop sign, police said.

The crash happened 3:35 p.m in the 400 block of West 26th Street, police said. The cyclist was turning right from South Stewart Street onto 26th Street when the driver, heading west down 26th, hit him, police said.

The cyclist was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crash was captured on surveillance footage, police said.

Officers cited the driver for failing to stop at a stop sign and driving on an expired license without insurance, police said.

The bicyclist is at least the seventh cyclist a driver has killed this year in Chicago.

An average of five to six bicyclists were killed every year between 2012-2019 in Chicago, according to state data. But nine bicyclists were killed in 2020, and 10 were killed in 2021.
