Rudy Giuliani spotted at Connecticut rest stop, meets two state politicians - CT Insider

Jim Griffin agreed the chances a pair of Republican politicians would randomly run into one of the most well known Republicans in the country at a rest stop in Connecticut the day before Thanksgiving are astronomical.

“I said, ‘Look, I'll be damned because that’s Rudy Giuliani, right?’ Who would have thunk?” Griffin said. “I'm a former Eagle Boy Scout, altar boy. I'm not gonna lie to you. It certainly wasn't planned. But, it did feel like, I'll be damned. Rudy Giuliani. You probably can't find a way to get an appointment with him. Here he is, standing here in line with a doughnut and some water.”

Griffin has run for office in the past, years ago as a Democrat against U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson. He has since switched parties.

He and state Rep. Joe Hoxha, R-Bristol, were nearing the end of almost 24 hours of traveling after a week in California. They’d caught a red-eye the day prior into Newark Airport, and found themselves in need of some refreshment.

The pair stopped off at the Darien rest stop on I-95, and Hoxha went to use the facilities.

“There was a lot of traffic on the GW. It was the day before Thanksgiving,” Hoxha said. “A lot of traffic, so we needed to stop to get some coffee and stuff. I go to use the bathroom when I come out I see [Griffin] talking to somebody that looks like Rudy Giuliani, and as I get closer, sure enough, that's who it was.”

Giuliani was mayor of New York City between 1994 and 2001. More recently, he's become known as an advisor to and lawyer for former President Donald Trump. Giuliani represented Trump in several lawsuits alleging interference in the 2020 presidential election. He was arrested in August in connection to the the election in Georgia and was found liable in a defamation lawsuit by two Georgia election workers who he falsely accused of fraud.

Hoxha didn’t have the opportunity to make much conversation. It was just a chance meeting.

“I kind of just introduced myself and said, you know, something to the effect of, ‘Hey, nice to meet you,’” Hoxha said. “I mentioned that I was a Republican and he said something to the effect of, ‘Keep up the good work’ or ‘keep up the good fight’ or something like that, you know, just pretty general casual stuff.”

But Griffin had met Giuliani before, decades ago. Griffin had been on the board of the West Point Society of New York and Giuliani was mayor of New York City. At the time, they had a friend in common, which Griffin reminded Giuliano of at their chance meeting:

“He said, ‘You are friend of Ted's?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Did you go to West Point?’ I said, ‘Yes, I did.’ I said, ‘You came and spoke to us.’ He said, ‘That's right, a couple of times.’”
