Grover Cleveland spent three years fishing and dabbling at a law practice and keeping out of the public eye after losing the White House in 1888. He reintroduced himself to voters in 1891, writing a lengthy disquisition on the coinage of silver. This launched him on the path to becoming the only president to lose the office and win it back four years later.

Donald Trump is doing it differently and a fact will have to be reckoned with. He maintained his dominance, and may well return to the White House, by relentlessly flogging the idea that the election was stolen from him, that he was the country’s rightful president, that Joe Biden is illegitimate.
