A man accused of assaulting and trying to disarm an Arnold police officer told investigators that he fled from a traffic stop because he was wanted on a drug warrant and had a large amount of crack and heroin in the SUV he was driving, according to authorities.

Tyrone Anthony Lee, 35, of the 1000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, disarming a police officer and possession of drugs with the intent to deliver along with counts of resisting arrest and fleeing from police.

Lee was being detained in the Westmoreland County jail after a judge denied bail because he has a pending gun charge in Allegheny County, according to court records. A preliminary hearing on the new charges is scheduled before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. on Dec. 14.

A Westmoreland County detective was asked to investigate the Dec. 1 incident that began about 3:30 a.m. while the officer was patrolling in the 1800 block of Fifth Avenue in Arnold, according to a criminal complaint.

While the officer was checking the registration on a Jeep Cherokee, the complaint said, the vehicle ran a stop sign and then fled when he tried to pull it over.

Police said the SUV continued along Fifth Avenue into New Kensington and that two men ran from the vehicle after it crashed into a retaining wall at the intersection of Fifth Street.

The officer caught up to the fleeing driver on Fourth Avenue and tried to take him into custody, but Lee was able to get away by repeatedly striking the officer in the head and face, the complaint said.

The officer continued chasing Lee and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint, the complaint said. But rather than getting on the ground, Lee lunged for the officer’s gun, according to investigators.

Additional officers arrived on the scene and helped to take Lee into custody, police said. The officer was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital for treatment of injuries to his face and eye as well as concussion-like symptoms, according to the complaint.

Police said Lee had two bricks of heroin and a large amount of crack cocaine when he was searched.

Lee told the detective he was in the process of “serving” or selling drugs to the other man in the SUV, whom he did not name, when the officer began following him, the complaint said.

He told detectives he didn’t stop because he had drugs in the vehicle and was wanted on a warrant in Allegheny County for a pending drug case, police said.

In September 2021, Arnold police charged Lee with illegal possession of a firearm and four counts of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver, which are felonies, along with nine misdemeanor counts for drug possession.

A district judge ordered Lee to stand trial on the charges, but he did not appear for formal arraignment in Westmoreland County Court, court records show.
