ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) – A man is facing several charges after pipe bombs and drugs were discovered during a traffic stop Monday in Rowan County, authorities said.
The deputy stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station on Long Ferry Road in the Salisbury area, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The stop was for an expired tag.
According to the deputy, the driver appeared to be very nervous, and a K-9 officer was called to the scene.
The K-9 alerted to drugs in the vehicle and other deputies began a search. They found what appeared to be several pipe bombs in the vehicle’s glove box, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies stopped the search and moved everyone back from the vehicle. The gas station was also evacuated, authorities said.
The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squad responded and eventually detonated the pipe bombs, according to information from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Members of the bomb squad searched the vehicle for additional explosives and found methamphetamine, a glass smoking pipe and some ball bearings, a news release stated.
Deputies identified the driver as 45-year-old Christopher Wade McDaniel. Search warrants were obtained by detectives for a search of his home and his parents’ residence. No other explosives or materials were found at the two homes, according to the sheriff’s office.
McDaniel was charged with the following:
- Possession of weapons of mass destruction
- Possession of methamphetamine
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- No operator’s license
- No financial responsibility
- Expired registration
He was booked into the Rowan County Detention Center on a $250,000 secured bond, deputies said.
