A TikTok star known as "Tunnel Girl" has hit a roadblock. The Virginia woman, known on social media by her TikTok account name, "Kala the Science Girl," has gone viral after posting videos showing her constructing an underground shelter at her home. "Just been over a year since I started building my underground tunnel system." she told WUSA, also saying, "I'm planning to construct a storm shelter off the side of my basement."But now, her tunneling efforts have come to a halt as local building and zoning officials have issued an order for her to stop work.She has drawn in more than a half million followers who seemed to enjoy tuning in to see her efforts to build the tunnel system. Viewers have taken to referring to her as "Tunnel Girl."She began filming the process of tunneling in 2022. Officials told WUSA that a site inspection was conducted on Dec. 7 at the home in question and that they are working with the homeowner to get the project up to code. They say they want to make sure that everyone — the homeowner and her neighbors — is safe. The TikTok star told WUSA that she's keeping hope for light at the end of the tunnel, and said she hopes she gets any permits or approvals she needs to get digging again.
