For smart men’s sweater shopping, think merino wool. These fine, thin knits look sophisticated, keep you from overheating and—most important—needn’t cost a ton. Our value-obsessed shopper hunted for the best buys.

PRIMO MERINO Skip the cashmere—a trio of winning finds in the breathable, durable, affordable sheep’s wool.

A LOT can go wrong when you’re buying sweaters. As a dogged value shopper, I should know. In my less-prudent past, I’ve spent eye-watering sums for cashmere that pilled quickly, while thick fisherman’s knits—almost as pricey—nearly boiled me alive since I don’t live in Greenland. Andskimping on price usually means resigning yourself to flimsy polyester.

But a happy medium exists: the fine-gauge merino sweater. Merino wool is significantly cheaper and more durable than cashmere yet still pretty soft, said Tom Scott, an assistant professor specializing in fashion design and knitwear at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. And—critical for those of us who work in inhospitably toasty offices—it’s famously breathable.
