While a massive snowstorm expected Wednesday could wind up hammering much of the state with more than a foot of snow, it won’t begin to crank up until the afternoon or evening and will be mainly over shortly after dawn on Thursday, forecasters say.

Expect snow to get started around 4 or 5 p.m. in Central Jersey and in neighborhood of 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in North Jersey, AccuWeather.com meteorologist Nicole LoBiondo says.

That closely matches up with what Sean Rowland of Hackettstown-based WeatherWorks, a private forecasting company says. Snow will begin falling in Central Jersey in the mid-to-late afternoon before pushing into North Jersey within the next couple of hours.

“As you get toward New Brunswick, we’re looking at a start time between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. And then, if you get towards the New York (State_ border it maybe starts an hour or two after that, so it’s generally mid-to late afternoon for a good chunk of the state,” Rowland said.

The National Weather Service is calling for up to two feet of snow in parts of New Jersey from a winter storm expected to start on Wednesday.

In South Jersey, the storm will get going sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. though coastal areas of Atlantic and Cape May will see only rain for the duration of the storm.

While North Jersey will get all snow for the duration of the storm, the key to the storm in Central Jersey will be where the rain/snow line sets up.

LoBiondo notes it will run from southwest to northeast with towns on the north side of the line getting primarily snow and towns south of the line possibly transitioning to mixed precipitation of snow and sleet around 8 or 9 p.m.

“We’ll probably start off with snow in Trenton while in Toms River the precipitation is likely to fall as rain,” LoBiondo said.

The winter storm is expected to hit New Jersey starting on Wednesday.

The storm is expected to continue through the overnight before tapering off from west to east beginning around 8 a.m. to 9 a.m as the center of the low-pressure system will be mainly offshore by then, she said.

There could be a few lingering flurries until about 11 a.m. or noon, according to LoBiondo.

Rowland also said that by daybreak Thursday, the storm will be nearing its conclusion.

“We’re still probably precipitating right around sunrise on Thursday, but we’re in the process of ending,” he said “So we won’t have much that goes into the day on Thursday.”

The winter storm should push through New Jersey by Thursday morning.
