TOLEDO, Ohio -- Toledo raced out to a 16-point lead early in the opening half and went on to down the Northern Illinois University men's basketball team, 78-55, on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 22) at Savage Arena.

The Rockets made 12 three pointers in the contest, shooting 40 percent (12-of-30) from beyond the arc, and outrebounded NIU, 43-33.

Junior Trendon Hankerson (Novi, Mich./Novi) led the Huskies with 16 points, sophomore Tyler Cochran (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) tied his career-high with 15 points and finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.

"The start hurt us, I think it was 22-6 and then we wanted to play," said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. "We missed some shots early, but we didn't get any stops. We played tentative, Toledo had more intensity coming out, maybe because they made shots, but we didn't weather the storm."

Toledo (7-3, 2-0 MAC) opened the contest on a 10-2 run before a jumper from sophomore Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook, Ill./Iowa Western CC) trimmed the Rockets advantage back to a half-dozen. Toledo answered with the next 10 as the Rockets led, 20-4, with 12:24 left before the intermission.

Thornton scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

A 13-2 run by the Huskies cut the Rocket lead to 34-24 with 2:38 remaining in the opening half. Junior Darius Beane (Carbondale, Ill./Southern Illinois) scored a half-dozen during the burst and Cochran added four.

Beane finished with nine points and a game-high three steals.

The Rockets took a 40-26 lead into the intermission. Ryan Rollins had 12 points in the opening 20 minutes to lead the way for Toledo, Spencer Littleson added 11 points as the Rockets shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the field in the first half. Hankerson and Cochran each had seven points to pace the Huskies in the first stanza.

Five points from Hankerson early in the second half helped the Huskies get back within a dozen just two-and-a-half minutes into the second half. The Toledo advantage was 47-34 before a quick 7-0 burst gave the Rockets a 54-34 lead with 13:39 remaining.

Four-straight points from Cochran helped the Huskies cut the Toledo lead back to 15 just past the midway point of the half, but the Huskies were unable to get any closer as Toledo maintained its perfect home record.

Littleson scored a game-high 18 points to lead Toledo. Rollins added 16 points, Mattia Acunzo scored 15 points and Marreon Jackson finished with 11 for the Rockets.

NIU will return to action on Saturday, January 2, when the Huskies host Bowling Green. Tipoff against the Falcons is slated for 5 p.m. and will be the second half of a doubleheader with the NIU women's basketball team hosting Western Michigan at 1 p.m.
