Sen. Lamar Alexander said Sunday that there should be no doubt who won the presidential election after the Electoral College casts its votes Monday, and said he hopes President Donald Trump puts the country first.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Tennessee Republican, who is retiring at the end of the current session of Congress, said Trump’s efforts to overturn election results “should stop.”

When asked by NBC News host Chuck Todd if there was any doubt who won the election, Alexander responded: “Shouldn’t be after Monday. The states have counted, certified their votes. The courts have resolved the disputes. It looks very much like the electors will vote for Joe Biden. And when they do, I hope that [Trump] puts the country first.”

Alexander added that while he believes Trump had the right to contest the results, “I don’t think his lawyers have a right to go to court with specious lawsuits with no evidence. And I think the processes say it’s over on Monday if the electors vote for Joe Biden, which I expect that they will.”

“Monday, it should stop,” he said.

He added that given the dire circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic and the critical effort of delivering the vaccine, the presidential transition process cannot afford “to lose one day.”

The vast majority of Republicans in Congress have yet to publicly acknowledge Biden’s victory, and 126 House Republicans last week backed an effort to have votes in four battleground states thrown out, effectively handing the election to Trump. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear that case Friday.

The 538 members of the Electoral College will cast their presidential votes Monday, almost certainly for Joe Biden, who won 304 electoral votes to Trump’s 227. The new Congress will count the votes Jan. 6 and declare the next president.

Trump, however, appears unlikely to concede, falsely claiming on Twitter as recently as Sunday afternoon that the election was rigged. Trump and his allies have lost nearly 60 separate court cases challenging the results.
