A nor’easter that kicked off Wednesday evening in Massachusetts and continues to sweep through the state Thursday afternoon will likely leave 12-18 inches of snow in communities across the commonwealth by the time the winter storm tapers off.

The major weather event, named Winter Storm Gail by the Weather Channel, has already brought as much as 17 inches of snow to some Berkshire County towns, including Goshen, according to the National Weather Service’s reported snow amounts.

As of around noon, the nor’easter had dumped 11 inches on Pittsfield, 11.5 inches on Springfield, 10.5 inches on Worcester, 12.5 inches on Boston and as much as 6 inches on parts of Cape Cod, the weather service’s data showed.

When exactly the nor’easter will end depends on geography. According to Bill Simpson, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Boston/Norton office, snow should stop falling as early as roughly 1 p.m. in Western Massachusetts and as late as around 7 p.m. along the eastern coast of the commonwealth.

However, the storm - which reached its height overnight Wednesday, dropping snow at a rate of 1-2 inches per hour at various points early Thursday - is already beginning to taper off, Simpson noted early Thursday afternoon.

“At this point, it’s just very light flurries,” he said.

In the Berkshires, Pittsfield should see snowfall end around 1 p.m. In the Pioneer Valley, precipitation will stop in Springfield closer to 2 p.m., according to Simpson.

By mid-afternoon, between 2 and 3 p.m., snow should finish falling in Central Massachusetts, and by around sunset or late afternoon, precipitation will conclude in Middlesex, Essex and Norfolk counties as well as Greater Boston, the meteorologist said.

“It’s pretty widespread, so from Boston to anywhere west, it’s been 12 to 18 inches,” Simpson noted. “A couple areas have seen less, but generally, there have been 12-18 inches, as forecast.”

Light snowfall will last later on the Cape and in coastal communities in Southeastern Massachusetts, with flurries lingering until roughly 6 or 7 p.m., according to Simpson.

“The southeast coast should receive some light snow through the evening,” he said. “Again, the snow will last later on Cape Cod and in Southeastern Mass.”

Along with heavy snow, Gail also battered Massachusetts with strong wind gusts and brought marine hazards to the coast of the commonwealth.

Gusts as high as 55 miles per hour were forecast in parts of Southeastern Massachusetts, and on Martha’s Vineyard, gusts of 60 mph were predicted, the weather service said.

Other communities in the eastern half the Bay State were expected to receive gusts as high as 45 mph, according to the federal agency.

“The hazardous conditions could impact this morning’s commute,” the weather service said in the winter warning it issued for nearly the entire state Wednesday. “Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.”

Heavy winds are expected to last through the evening, with gusts of 45 mph persisting on the Cape, according to Simpson.

“It’s going to stay pretty gusty until mid-evening as winds taper off,” he said.

Quiet and more seasonable weather will return over the weekend and last through early next week, though rain or snow showers are possible Sunday into Monday as a cold front crosses the region, according to the weather service.

The forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.
