PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team put up 18 runs in the first four innings to cruise past Lehigh, 18-6, in seven innings on a gusty Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. With the win, La Salle improves to 21-12, which is tied with the 1982 team for the best start through 33 games in school history.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lehigh actually led after an RBI single in the top of the first inning, but the Explorers got the lead right back in the bottom half.
  • Sophomore Elijah Dickerson cranked a two-run home run to right center to quickly give the Explorers a 2-1 edge. Shortly thereafter, graduate student Ryan Guckin scored on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 3-1.
  • La Salle added to its lead with four more runs in the second. Junior Tatem Levins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then sophomore Connor Coolahan scored on an error to make it 5-1. Guckin then delivered a two-run single through the right side to give La Salle a 7-1 lead.
  • Lehigh fought back in the third and got two runs, but freshman right-hander Nick Hammer worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve a four-run difference.
  • The Explorers opened things up in the third inning, batting around the order and piling up eight runs on three hits and six walks in the inning.
  • In the third, senior Alfonse Sadallah stole home, Dickerson walked with the bases loaded and then Guckin drove in two more with a double to open up an 11-3 lead. Still in the third, Sadallah worked a bases-loaded walk before Coolahan drove a two-run single and senior Jack Cucinotta added an RBI single to make it 15-3 in favor of the home team.
  • The Mountain Hawks added three runs in the fourth to come within nine, but the Explorers' bats remained hot as Guckin smacked his first homer of the year to right center. Sadallah and Coolahan each added RBI singles as the Explorers held an 18-6 lead after four.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Explorers tie the 1982 squad with the best record (21-12) through 33 games in the history of La Salle baseball. That team went on to finish 23-12. It's an even better start than the 1985 team that won a program-record 31 games and made the NCAA tournament, as that team was 20-13 through 33 games.
  • Guckin had a monster day, going 3-for-5 with five RBI, three runs scored, a homer, a double and a walk. It was his 41st career double, moving him into eighth place with Joey Ravert on the all-time program list.
  • Sadallah had quite the day himself, going 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBI, two walks and a career-high four stolen bases. Coolahan had a two-hit day as well while driving in three runs and swiping a bag.
  • Cucinotta stole two bases as well, pushing his career total to 37, giving him sole possession of eighth place on the program's all-time stolen bases list.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will look to build off their 6-2 Atlantic 10 record when they host St. Bonaventure for a four-game series this weekend. Game one is set for Friday at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
