A wanted South Bend man was arrested, after a LaPorte County traffic stop reportedly turned up a significant amount of marijuana and two pistols. LaPorte County sheriff’s deputies say they pulled over a vehicle for multiple traffic infractions in the area of U.S. 20 and County Road 400 East just after 2:30 Friday afternoon.

Police say the driver identified himself as Delmonte Scales but they later identified him as Delmonte D. Campbell, a 29-year-old South Bend man with three outstanding arrest warrants from St. Joseph County. When Campbell was directed to get out of the vehicle, he allegedly tossed an item across the center console onto the passenger side floorboard, and the front seat passenger reportedly began walking toward a trash can.

Police say they found a loaded pistol magazine on the driver’s side floorboard, a loaded pistol resting between the center console and the passenger seat, a loaded nine-millimeter magazine on the driver’s side of the center console, and a loaded pistol with an extended 30-round magazine under a shirt on the front seat passenger floorboard. Police say they also found a significant amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Campbell was taken to the LaPorte County Jail on suspicion of carrying a handgun without a license with a prior conviction and dealing in marijuana with a prior conviction. Police say he was also issued traffic citations for failure to signal, following too closely, and speeding.
