MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- People in one Southern Illinois neighborhood say enough is enough when it comes to speeders. There's new concern after a driver recently blew a stop sign.
Now, residents say they hope a little peer pressure on social media might make a difference before they get the police involved.
Murphysboro residents want to get the word out about the dangers of drivers ignoring a stop sign in Murphysboro.
Homeowners on 7th and Hanson Street in Murphysboro said drivers speed through the four-way stop there. They tell News 3 it happens several times a day.
"There are kids out here who are playing. There are people riding bikes. There are older people walking with walkers. There are a lot of things that are happening on this road," said homeowner Kaylee Shelton.
Shelton reached out to News 3 about the traffic incidents. She says she has not gone to police, but she has posted a video of the alleged speeders on the Murphysboro Crime Watch Facebook page for all to see.
"The camera on my house can pretty much see the whole street. My front yard and everything," said Shelton. "I was walking my son to school the other morning and caught a car flying down the street. I mean flying," she continued.
Lisa Sherman, Shelton's neighbor, also says she is concerned about the intersection.
"They don't care. They're not paying attention, talking on their cellphones, just speeding through here. It's terrible," said Sherman.
Both women said they have watched people roll through the stop sign and surpass the 25-mile per hour speed limit. They tell News 3 they want drivers to just be more mindful and stop.
"Slow down, there are children, there are people, there are older people here. People on bicycles. My grandson ball rolled down there this hill. We back out of the driveway. You can get hit, real easy," said Sherman.
News 3 reached out to the Murphysboro Police Department for comment but no one was available.
