BIG RAPIDS - It was quite a first-half start for Ferris State's football team on Thursday.
Football returned to Top Taggart for the first time in two years and the Bulldogs open the game against the Findlay Oilers on a good start.
The contest ended well after press deadline and the full game story will be published in Saturday's issue.
Ferris exploded to a 40-14 halftime lead, scoring on its first three possessions and five of its first six.
FSU had 383 total yards in the half compared to 227 for the Findlay Oilers. Senior quarterback Jared Bernhardt rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns while completing all seven of his passes for 96 yards and two more scores. He shared QB duties with Malik Mitchell who passed for 22 yards and ran for 18.
Findlay struck first on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Matt Winzeler to Jake Brown for 7-0 lead on the game's first drive. Ferris marched down 76 yards with Bernhard running 5 yards for the score. The kick failed and the Oilers still led 7-6. But Bernhardt had scores of 35 and 10 yards on running plays for a 20-7 lead going into the second. He then had a 30-yard scoring pass to Marcus Taylor for a 27-7 lead. Findlay cut it to 27-14 on Winzeler's 32-yard scoring pass to Mike Riggerman. But Bernhardt added a 28-yard TD run and passed 4 yards to Mason Pline for the 40-14 halftime lead.
Ferris scored early in the third on a 65-yards pass from Bernhardt to Sy Barnett for a 47-14 lead
Kent City 3, Morley Stanwood 2
It was a tough five-set loss for Morley Stanwood's volleyball team to Kent City on Wednesday in Central State Activities Association Silver Division play.
It was 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-6.
"It was not our best performance," Mohawk coach Robin Kozuch said. "We made too many errors and not enough offense. We need to work on swinging more consistently and aggressively."
In kills, Braelyn Berry had 25, followed by Madison Garbow and Ayiana Sims with five apiece.
Garbow had four aces while Berry had three and Emilee Cornell two.
Brooke Edgerly had 21 digs while Berry had 19 and Sims 10.
Cornell had 27 assists.
The Mohawks are home against White Cloud on Wednesday.
Reed City 1-1
The Coyotes were at Grayling on Tuesday and lost to the host school 25-21 25-15 but beat Oscoda 19-25, 25-19, 15-14.
For Reed City, Demi Lodholtz had five kills and an ace, Kyleigh Weck had three aces, seven kills and a block. Katelynn Holmes had five kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Lizzie Cockrell had two aces, three kills and 22 digs.
"We played better as the night went on," Reed City coach Don Patterson said. "Our serving was very effective tonight. I thought our defense made some nice improvements tonight."
Reed City is 3-6 and will be home on Tuesday with Grant.
Pine River 3, Manistee 0
Pine River won over Manistee 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.
"It was so nice to be in our own gym tonight and see fans in the gym," Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. " Nothing beats the feel of a fan filled gym. As for the team, we had a lot of energy throughout the night. We used that energy to help us out of a few snags. Tonight's win was a complete team effort. The seniors continue to provide leadership and confidence for the other members of the team. We can't wait to start conference play next week."
SOCCER
Gladwin 6, Pine River 0
The Pine River (2-3) soccer team played at Gladwin (5-2-1) on Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Michigan Soccer League Conference game. The Bucks offense struggled and was unable to get the ball into the net.
"Although the Bucks came up on the short end of a 6-0 loss they continue to show big improvements to their game," coach Dave Fischer said. "Although the score does not reflect it, the defense proved to be quite a handful for the Flying G's as they forced them offsides over 20 times."
Pine River is in action again Tuesday at home against the ninth- ranked Cheboygan Chiefs.
Newaygo 4, Chippewa Hills 2
The Warriors fell to 0-1 in the CSAA and 0-5 overall with this Thursday loss.
Goalkeepers were Zach Clark and Justin Sorsen. Clark and Andrew Broomfield scored goals.
"We were aggressive in the second half," CH coach Jay Franks said.
Chippewa Hills will play at Fremont on Tuesday.
