Darnold tops 300 yards and rushes for two scores in the 24-9 win against Texans
Sam Darnold and the Panthers are off to a 3-0 to start to the 2021 season with a 24-9 win against the Texans. Darnold passed for 304 yards and rushed for two touchdowns in the victory. DJ Moore was his top target, catching eight passes for 126 yards, including 100 of those by the second quarter.
Panthers star Christian McCaffrey left the game in the second quarter with a non-contact hamstring injury. Rookie Chuba Hubbard saw the majority of the snaps at running back with McCaffrey out and rushed for 52 yards on 11 attempts and also caught three passes for 27 yards. And rookie cornerback Jaycee Horn broke bones in a foot during a second-half play.
For the Texans, rookie Davis Mills completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 168 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL start. Receiver Brandin Cooks caught nine of those passes for 112 yards, and Anthony Miller hauled in Mills' touchdown pass.
Mills was sacked four times, with Haason Reddick, Brian Burns, Frankie Luvu and Morgan Fox each getting to to the quarterback. Fox and Reddick split one of the sacks.

Panthers lead 7-6 at halftime
The Panthers' offense struggled after Christian McCaffrey's injury, losing possession on downs and punting on their three ensuing drives. They rushed for just 12 yards outside of McCaffrey's 31.
Sam Darnold was 13-of-20 passing for 158 yards and a touchdown run, and DJ Moore accounted for 100 of those yards on six catches.
The Texans' offense and time of possession were stunted until their final possession of the first half, but Davis Mills did finish the half 9-of-11 passing for 79 yards and the TD pass to Anthony Miller. Brandin Cooks had four catches on five targets for 60 yards.
Houston had seven first downs to Carolina's 12, and 108 yards to the Panthers' 187.

Prior to the Texans' final first-half scoring drive, the teams had combined for seven points and seven punts. They were 2-for-9 on third down. The Texans had averaged 2.6 yards per play, just 2.1 per pass, and had three first downs.

Panthers defense at it again
The Panthers, who have allowed the fewest yards through two games of any team since 2008, are at it again tonight. They allowed a total of 21 yards in the first quarter, well off their league-best average of 190 per game, and limited the Texans to 4:32 of possession.
Carolina also forced two punts on two drives, which comprised eight total offensive snaps for the Texans.

The Panthers' first scoring drive included completions of 29 and 26 yards, both times to DJ Moore. The Texans gave up seven completions of 20+ yards in their first two games combined. Remember, Houston is without safety Justin Reid tonight.
Darnold was 4-for-5 for 68 yards passing on that drive, with the lone incompletion a drop.

Is the over/under on Davis Mills' passing yards low?
If it seems as if setting an over/under on Davis Mills' passing yardage at 214.5 is low, here's something to keep in mind: The Texans actually have ALL FIVE of their running backs active in this game tonight.
Second-year pro Scottie Phillips, who was inactive for the first two games, joins Rex Burkhead, Mark Ingram, David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay in a remarkably crowded backfield.

For those curious how Vegas sees this Thursday Night Football game...
The Panthers opened as -4.5 favorites and are now -8 favorites with Davis Mills starting. The total opened at 43.5 and is now at 43. Neither line has seen any movement on Thursday.
Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is the center of the most bet player props for tonight's game. The most bet being that he will score the first touchdown of the game that pays out at +333.
The over/under for Mills is set at 214.5 yards in his first career NFL start.

Ahead of their game against the Panthers, the Texans signed former Panthers K Joey Slye to the 53 and elevated QB Jeff Driskel and WR Chris Moore from the practice squad.

How the Panthers and Texans compare in age
The Athletic's Mike Sando analyzed every starting lineup in the NFL to determine how they rank in age. There's no correlation to age and success or lack thereof, but some stations are more desirable than others. Having a good and young lineup is ideal, and conversely being bad and old is the least desirable state.
The latter may apply to the Texans, who have the third-oldest starting lineup in the league, younger than only the Seahawks and defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. As for the Panthers, they are in the midst of a rebuild and their top line players reflect that, ranking as the league's fourth-youngest group.

Reiss: What I'm looking for from the Texans tonight
All eyes are on Davis Mills, whom Nick Caserio selected in the third round with his first draft pick as Texans general manager. Because of injuries and the pandemic’s impact on the 2020 college football season, Mills started just 11 games at Stanford. He’s a developmental prospect who would not start this early in an ideal world. Tyrod Taylor landing on IR with a hamstring injury means Mills should receive at least three starts — at home against the Panthers, at Buffalo against the Bills and at home against the Patriots. It’s only Week 3, but right now those teams rank first, second and third, respectively, in defensive DVOA.
Even with Taylor at QB, the Texans have wanted a strong running game to be their offensive identity. That’ll be even more important with Mills now under center. The Texans’ offensive line needs to step up. Through two games, the Texans rank 31st in yards before contact per carry.
If the Texans remain this inefficient on the ground, Mills’ time as the starter could be ugly. But if Mills exceeds expectations, perhaps he’ll position himself as a long-term answer at quarterback for a Texans team in need of one with Deshaun Watson unlikely to ever play again for Houston.

Person: What I'm looking for from the Panthers tonight
Fast starts have been few and far between in the Panthers’ 26-year history. But with a win tonight at Houston, the Panthers will be 3-0 for just the fifth time.
In two of those previous instances, the Panthers went on to their only Super Bowl appearances. Only once did the Panthers fail to make the playoffs after winning their first three games: John Fox’s first team lost eight in a row after a 3-0 start and finished 7-9.
Of course, critics will say the Panthers haven’t beaten anybody. And though the Panthers are facing a rookie quarterback for the second time in three weeks, they also drubbed a Saints team that was the talk of the NFL the previous week after blowing out Green Bay.
There will be tougher tests to come, but this Panthers’ defense is special. They’re young, fast and well coached, with defensive coordinator Phil Snow sending pressure from everywhere.
The keys for the Panthers tonight: Sam Darnold must protect the ball and the defense must stop running back Mark Ingram on first and second downs to put Davis Mills in a lot of third-and-long situations. I have the Panthers winning big, 31-13.

Just call this the "Better than Expected" Bowl
Carolina Panthers (2-0) at Houston Texans (1-1), NFLN at 8:20 p.m. ET
This matchup did not look like one of the stronger national telecasts when scheduled, but with the teams starting out a combined 3-1, it's more relevant and intriguing than anyone would have predicted.
The Panthers head to Houston having won the past three meetings between these teams. Quarterback Sam Darnold has been effective this season with a 100.5 passer rating through Carolina’s first two games, and running back Christian McCaffrey leads the NFL with 324 yards from scrimmage. But the Panthers’ defense has been particularly impressive. Carolina is allowing 190 yards and 10.5 points per game. Pass rushers Haason Reddick and Brian Burns have both had at least one sack in each game this season, and the Panthers defense has forced three takeaways so far. They are +1 on the season.
The Texans will start rookie quarterback Davis Mills, who came on in relief of an injured Tyrod Taylor in the team’s 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Mills was 8-of-18 for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Mills, a 2021 third-round NFL Draft pick out of Stanford, will look to top receiver Brandin Cooks, who’s averaging 105 yards per game. Cooks is fifth in the NFL in receiving yards and tied for ninth in receptions at 14. The Texans are +3 on turnovers this season.

This game would not have happened a year ago
Tonight's game is one that came about with the addition of the NFL's 17th regular-season game. Specifically, it was added as part of the league's enhanced scheduling rotation.
So why this matchup? Each team's 17th game is against "an interconference opponent that finished in the same standing within the teams' respective divisions the previous season," according to the NFL. The Panthers were 5-11 and finished third in the NFC South in 2020, and the Texans finished 4-12 and third in the AFC South.
