Latinus 1 Stop has been providing both an ice cream and taco shop experience for almost 6 months. Owner Armando Ortiz said they are preparing to open an ice cream truck in the coming months, taking their sweets to the streets.
The idea of going mobile is not new to the store, as they have taken a small ice cream cart with about 300 popsicles to different events across town.
“We have this cart which we took to a soccer tournament, and we can put Mexican-style popsicles in there and we roll around and we just keep going,” Ortiz said.
The truck is expected to come in the coming weeks, and he hopes to get on the road before the summer is over.
All the goods from the ice cream and agua frescas (fruit waters) to paletas (popsicles) and parfaits are homemade in the back and then placed out front for customers to enjoy.
Similar establishments can be found in Nashville and Louisville, but Ortiz said he wanted to give the Hispanic community in the Owensboro area somewhere that to without having to make an hour-long trip for the specialty treats.
And now that it’s here, Ortiz said several non-Hispanic people come back from vacation in Mexico asking if he carries some of the treats they had while visiting.
“It does but does not surprise me that we’ve been having a lot of the longtime residents that have always wanted to come and visit us, which is a good thing because they are coming to explore the new flavor,” Ortiz said.
Ortiz said the support from Owensboro has been great, something he’s become accustomed to throughout his endeavors throughout the city. He said even though he is from out of town, he appreciates that the city has supported him so much.
“I’m very blessed because,” Ortiz said. “Owensboro is a great community, not only to grow a family, but it is warm and big enough to do a lot of stuff. But it’s also small enough for everybody to know each other.”
