Watch: Angry scenes as Just Stop Oil protesters block traffic on major London Bridges

A frustrated commuter was stopped by police after trying to break up a Just Stop Oil blockade by shoving one of the eco-protesters to the ground.

The workman was caught on camera losing his patience as around 45 activists slow-marched across Blackfriars Bridge in central London earlier on Tuesday.

He is shown striding towards the group and pushing a protester off the road, right by where police officers were stood.

As he goes to target another activist, officers rush in to intervene as car horns are repeatedly blared in the background.

A struggle ensues and police pin the workman to a waste management van, prompting the driver to shout "get off my truck," while someone else says, "come on, give the guy a break, he's trying to get to work."

In a statement shared on Twitter, the Metropolitan Police said: "At around 08.25hrs, officers detained a male member of the public for common assault after an altercation between him and two Just Stop Oil protesters on Blackfriars Bridge this morning.

"There have been no arrests. Police are investigating the matter."

Just Stop Oil, also staged slow marches at London Bridge and Tower Bridge on Tuesday as they called for "no new oil, gas or coal projects in the UK".

In a statement following the confrontation, the group said: "This is an impossible situation. Do we disrupt other ordinary people, like this man, arrested for lashing out today, or just sit back and watch everything burn?

"That's where our government has left us. More and more people are realising taking action is the right thing to do."

This isn't the first time Just Stop Oil have faced physical violence from infuriated members of the public while staging their blockades.

On Friday a man was caught on camera in east London ripping banners out of protesters hands, pushing protesters to the ground, and lobbing one of their phones to the ground.

Urging members of the public not to intervene when protesters are blocking the road, the Met said in a statement: "We completely understand the frustration and anger of London's communities when protesters walk slowly in the roads.

"We urge people not to intervene and to wait for the arrival of police, who will attend the scene promptly. We thank people for their patience."
