Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police said a video of an arrest of a black man that attracted a lot of attention online Sunday was "a typical high-risk felony stop."
A video posted on Facebook Live showed the arrest. Several police officers had guns drawn around a car with two black passengers that had rear-ended another vehicle on Capital Boulevard on Sunday afternoon.
Darrin Jordan, 21, was charged with driving while impaired, hit and run, driving with revoked license, and felony flee to elude.
The man recording the video, Donnell Wooten, can be heard telling Jordan and a passenger to follow police orders.
"For so many officers to have their weapons drawn, and I understand their safety as well, it’s still wrong with everything that’s going on today," Wooten told WRAL.
According to police, Jordan had previously refused to leave a Super 8 Hotel on Capital Boulevard while intoxicated. When an officer approached the hotel, Jordan drove away and struck a tree while driving out of the hotel parking lot.
Police said Jordan later fled an attempted traffic stop and continued driving down Capital Boulevard where he struck a small tree in the median and then stopped after colliding with an SUV..
Officers arrived at the scene of the crash where Jordan initially refused to get out of his car but was taken into custody without further incident.
Wooten said he was in the right place at the right time to record the arrest. "I just feel grateful that God put me and my brother in a situation to be able to get these young men's attention before it got out of control," he said.
