On June 28, 1969 -- 51 years ago today -- a police raid on the gay bar led to a days-long riot in New York's Greenwich Village after resistance by patrons, who included Black and Latin trans figures Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Supreme Court decisions are coming SCOTUS is set to issue opinions Monday and Tuesday. Big pending cases involve a Louisiana law requiring doctors who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and whether the House and a prosecutor can subpoena President Trump's accounting firm and banks for his financial documents. NAFTA officially comes to an end The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement is set to go into effect Wednesday, replacing NAFTA. The deal has been praised from both sides of the aisle, and though it's similar to its predecessor, there are some key differences. Student athletes inch closer to getting paid A Senate committee on Wednesday is due to examine an NCAA Board of Governors report on a rule change allowing athletes to profit off their names, images and likenesses. The board voted unanimously last year in favor of the change, and, slowly but surely, the details are getting fleshed out. New employment numbers are released June's jobs report is set to be released Thursday. May's report found signs the economy could be recovering earlier than expected, but it may be small potatoes. The global recession is worse than experts predicted, and the US economy has struggled amid trade fights.
Coronavirus case numbers are (still) going up A projection by the CDC predicted the US could see 130,000 coronavirus deaths by Saturday, though many states had hoped to reopen by Fourth of July. Last week saw cases jump in more than half the states, affecting festivities. Spike Lee's 'Rodney King' to stream free on Netflix Netflix will make the film available to stream for free as part of its Black Lives Matter collection. The movie stars Roger Guenveur Smith as King, whose 1991 videotaped beating by Los Angeles police led to riots when the officers were acquitted. Aspen Ideas Festival goes digital You don't need to travel to participate. The festival begins today and will feature 56 speakers including Stacey Abrams, Dr. Anthony Fauci and Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza. The festival, once you sign up, is available to stream for free. MLB players report for duty Though several teams have positive coronavirus cases, players are to report to training camps by Wednesday for the 60-game season proceeding in late July. Fauci has said the season should not extend past October to prevent the spread of the virus. Women's soccer comes back, but should it? That's the question being asked as the National Women's Soccer League launched its monthlong Challenge Cup. Players including Megan Rapinoe and Tobin Heath opted out over coronavirus fears. And the entire Orlando Pride team withdrew after players and staff members tested positive. Nathan's hot dog eating contest Like it is on every Fourth of July, the competition is set to continue Saturday. The one major change is that fans will not be allowed in person to cheer on favorite eaters. Last year, Joey Chestnut wolfed 71 hot dogs on the men's side, while Miki Sudo put down 31 on the women's.
