Gold Star Bridge Intoxicated Wrong Way Driver

***GOLD STAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE WRONG WAY DRIVER/DWI ARREST***On the morning of June 26, 2020, at approximately 2:49 a.m., a Trooper was in the Groton turnaround of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge on I-95. The Trooper observed a vehicle enter the highway from Route 184 traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95. The Trooper immediately traveled to the New London side of the bridge in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then narrowly missed striking the State Police cruiser even with its emergency lights activated. The Trooper then began traveling on the southbound side of the highway across from the wrong way driver as additional Troopers began traveling northbound in an attempt to intercept the vehicle. The Trooper across the median began signaling for the operator to stop her vehicle, and she eventually slowed and stopped her vehicle in the shoulder as additional Troopers arrived on scene. The operator of the vehicle traveling the wrong way, a 29-year-old Putnam woman, was subsequently arrested for Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol and for Traveling the Wrong Way on a Limited Access Highway. This should serve as a reminder to always travel in the right most lanes. An intoxicated wrong way driver will typically travel in your left most lane as they believe they are traveling in their proper lane. As always, if you observe a wrong way driver immediately dial 9-1-1.

According to state police, the trooper tried to flag down the wrong-way driver and was eventually able to bring her to a stop in the shoulder of the highway.

State police identified the driver as a 29-year-old woman from Putnam, but they did not provide her name. She was charged with operating under the influence and traveling the wrong way on a limited-access highway.

State police said drivers should remember to always drive in the right-most lanes, as drunk drivers who are traveling the wrong way drive in the left-most lanes because they believe they are driving in their proper lane.
