NEW ORLEANS – Having not played a game since March 27, no one was quite sure what to expect Tuesday night from Holy Cross against Archbishop Rummel.
After a slow start, the Tigers awakened with a big five-run third inning to down the Raiders 6-3 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium
After a shaky start, Loyola signee Josh Orr came up big, pitching a complete game, scattering hits, using 104 pitches for the victory. Orr walked two, one intentionally, and struck out four.
“After two weeks, we kind of had the perfect timing,” Orr said. “Losing to Shaw and then bouncing back against Rummel with a big win. Going out there and scoring five runs in the third inning gave me a lot of confidence just to throw strikes and let my defense play behind me to get people out. I rely on my cut fastball. It’s very hard to hit, whenever you locate it and throw it for strikes.”
The Raiders played small ball and came up big in the bottom of the first inning.
Louisiana Tech signee Kyle Walker and Lance Johnson each bunted for hits and Walker scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0. After an intentional walk to Logan Bertucci, Tyler Cook singled home Johnson to make it 2-0.
Rummel (14-6, 2-3) extended the lead in the top of the second on a double to the wall in left field by Ethan Klapatch and an RBI single to right by Aidan Champagne to make it 3-0.
The Tigers (15-7, 2-2) had a huge top of the third inning, scoring five runs on just one hit. Ira Austin hit Blake Chauvin and Max Licciardi with pitches and then made the wrong read on a bunt play and all runners were safe to load the bases.
An error scored two runs to make it 3-2 and another error plated the tying run and it was 3-3. Davis Stephens squibbed a single to short right to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead before Todd Canatella plated another run on a ground to second base and it was 5-3.
The Tigers added a run in the top of the sixth on an error to make it 6-3 and Orr (4-1) made it stand up.
Ira Austin (1-2) took the loss for Rummel, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits. Austin hit two batters, walked two and struck out one. Michael Tant went the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Stephens had two hits to pace the Holy Cross offense while Lance Johnson had three singles for the Raiders, who lost their third straight game.
“It was a great team win,” Holy Cross coach Andy Cannizaro said. “Josh Orr was tremendous on the mound. I couldn’t ask him to do anything more. He picked up a hit tonight. Great defensive ballgame for us. Todd Canatella made several big plays in right for us. Big time team win. Anytime you beat Rummel, you know you have to play well to do that. Coach (Frank) Cazeaux does a great job with his program.”
The series concludes on Thursday at Tiger Park at 4 p.m.
“It was so awesome to be back at the ballpark, it was great,” Cannizaro said.
