Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, acknowledged for the first time on Monday that she attended the “Stop the Steal” protest on January 6, 2021, the rally hosted by Donald Trump shortly before his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. The former president used the event to falsely claim that the 2020 election was illegitimate and encouraged the hundreds in attendance to “fight like hell” and march to the Capitol building, where lawmakers preparing to certify Joe Biden’s victory were subsequently interrupted by a violent, antidemocratic mob.

Ginni, a prominent conservative activist whose activities have attracted renewed attention of late in light of the cases her husband is presiding over, had previously shown public support for the rally. She wrote “LOVE MAGA people!!!!” in a January 6 Facebook post—one she later edited to note it was “written before violence” broke out, according to Slate. But her actual attendance was not publicly known until she acknowledged it in a new interview with the Washington Free Beacon. “I was disappointed and frustrated that there was violence that happened following a peaceful gathering of Trump supporters on the Ellipse on Jan. 6,” she told the conservative outlet. Thomas then described “electoral integrity” as one of the “important” issues that must be debated “rationally in the political square. I fear we are losing that ability.”

Ginni claimed she had no involvement “with those who were planning and leading the Jan. 6 events,” She also said she got cold and left the rally prior to the start of Trump’s address and denied that she “paid or arranged for buses” used by rallygoers. “There are other stories saying I mediated feuding factions of leaders for that day. I did not,” she added.

The latest revelation is likely to only intensify progressive criticism about Ginni’s role in the January 6 saga,

though she insisted to Free Beacon that “Clarence doesn’t discuss his work with me, and I don’t involve him in my work.” A few weeks after the Capitol riot, Ginni sent an email to her husband’s former law clerks apologizing for her outspoken support for Trump’s “Stop the Steal” efforts. “I owe you all an apology. I have likely imposed on you my lifetime passions,” she wrote in a message addressed to the Thomas Clerk World email list, according to a Washington Post report. But any disapproval did not appear to dissuade her: In December, Thomas continued her 2020 election crusade by signing a letter condemning the bipartisan House committee tasked with investigating the Capitol riot—and specifically trying to punish two Republicans for participating in the committee.

“[The committee’s] overtly partisan political persecution…brings disrespect to our country’s rule of law, legal harassment to private citizens who have done nothing wrong, and which demeans the standing of the House,” the letter stated.
