Madison County supervisor Paul Griffin said he totally supports people going into the country and having a good time, but the limit was reached on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, at the Madison County Amusement Park, which is also known as Johnnie Baldwin’s Horse Track.
The Amusement Park, located in Griffin’s District 5, got the attention of Sheriff Randy Tucker and Griffin when it began hosting thousands of people at large outdoor concerts with extreme noise. The first weekend of March, a rap concert was held and, according to the park’s Facebook, Rapper Kevin Gates was to perform. During the events that weekend, concert goers were riding four wheelers on and off the property, through other people’s private property and on county roads. At least one person was shot at the event.
“The last three incidents that occurred over there someone ended up getting shot or killed and horses were killed,” Griffin said. “So, this kind of drew the line in the sand because I tried to contact the owner three times or more and didn’t get any answer. He didn’t return my call.”
The sheriff has also called over and over again to the man who is said to be leasing the land and the events organizer. He has not returned the calls to the sheriff either, Griffin said.
“This is not hearsay,” Griffin said. “This is what I experienced because I live less than a third of a mile away from there – really on the same road so I listen to it until they stop. But I didn’t know about the shooting and the four wheelers getting on other people’s property until Monday, March 7 when the sheriff told me about it.”
While Griffin said he isn’t against all the events that happen out at the amusement park, Tucker said he is against all of it during the supervisor’s board meeting on March 7. He told the board they were tearing up people’s private property, cutting people’s private fences, and his deputies have had to pursue the four wheelers up and down county roads.
“The concerts are going on all hours of the day and night and the people in that area are complaining nonstop,” Tucker said. “We are having violent crimes being committed. People being killed, people getting shot, and horses getting killed every time they have an event. We have got to do something…Nothing that we have tried to do with them has worked and quite frankly I’m sick of it.”
Tucker called it a “drunk and disorderly disaster every time they go up there.” Board attorney Mike Espy said the supervisor could file an injunction to stop the events completely because this is an emergency. This action was approved by the board, which is a court order requiring a person to cease a specific action.
“I’m not looking to stop the horse racing,” Griffin said in the meeting. “I’m looking to stop the big rap concerts and the four wheeler show. The horses are not a problem.”
Griffin said, from his point of view, they are looking to just stop the concerts and the actions that come with that. However, until the owner comes to sit at the table with him and the sheriff, Griffin said the property will remain shut down.
“This has been going on for a while and is the tip of the iceberg that happened that weekend,” Griffin said. “People live in the country and that limitation was reached Friday night. I don’t think that anywhere around the tri-county that people could go out and do what they did Friday and Saturday night and not get complaints.”
