SAN MATEO – Cash, drugs and a replica firearm were seized following a traffic stop in San Mateo over the weekend, police said.
Officers stopped a Mercedes-Benz for an unspecified traffic violation about 5:50 p.m. Saturday near Fashion Island and Mariners Island boulevards, the San Mateo Police Department said a news release.
Police said the driver, a 31-year-old Rancho Cordova resident, was determined to be on probation and subject to search. A subsequent search of the driver and the car turned up a “large amount” of cash, a scale, clear baggies and a replica BB gun.
Officers also searched a nearby hotel room where the driver and a passenger were staying and found an additional scale, drug paraphernalia, Xanax pills, fentanyl and methamphetamine, police said.
Police said 4.22 grams of fentanyl and 7.23 grams of methamphetamine were collected as evidence.
“Based on the discovery of cash, drugs, packaging (and) weighing material, and the replica firearm, it was determined the driver was likely engaging in drug sales,” police said.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, possession or purchase of a controlled substance for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The passenger, a 41-year-old Reno resident, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, as well as possession of narcotics and appropriation of lost property.
Both were released by citation at the scene in compliance with COVID-19 jail protocol and rules, police said.
