TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball used another solid start from Connor Shamblin to pick up a 7-2 win over Jacksonville State on Wednesday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The victory moves the 23rd-ranked Crimson Tide to 12-2 on the season and completes the home-and-home sweep of the Gamecocks for the 2021 campaign.

Shamblin (2-0) was reliable once again in the midweek start. The junior tossed a career-long 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits to pick up his second win of the season. Shamblin did not issue a walk while striking out six to match his career-high total before handing the ball over to his bullpen. Jake Eddington and Hunter Ruth followed, with the relief duo combining for 3.0 innings of one-run baseball that included five punchouts.

Alabama was led at the plate by William Hamiter, who finished 3-for-5 with a double two RBI and a run scored. Also contributing a multi-hit effort was Zane Denton. The Tide third baseman went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Jim Jarvis added to the offense with a team-high two runs and three walks in the contest.

"Connor Shamblin was just awesome, and we needed it. This was our fifth game in six days and Shamblin gave us a great start. He pounded the strike zone and really attacked their hitters with multiple pitches. It was good to see Jake Eddington and Hunter Ruth get some work in there the last three innings, as well. We did enough offensively, but I wish we were a little more efficient. They helped us a little bit, but we took advantage of it enough to get the win.  I'm happy that we're 12-2 and get to catch our breath tomorrow. We have to get ready for a really good Stetson team this weekend."

How It Happened

  • B2 | Alabama loaded the bases and used a catcher's interference with two outs to bring in the game's first run. With the bases still juiced, Jim Jarvis drew his first walk of the night in the next at-bat to give the Tide two runs in the second. (2-0, Alabama)
  • B4 | The Crimson Tide added four in the fourth. A pair of walks by Jarvis and Johnny Hawk put the first two on. One out later, William Hamiter singled back over the pitcher to score Jarvis. A wild pitch in the next at-bat crossed Hawk and moved Hamiter into scoring position with another walk and a hit-by-pitch loading them up. Zane Denton then delivered, sending an RBI-single to right to score a pair. (6-0, Alabama)
  • T5 | Jacksonville State got on the board in the fifth. A one-out double began the sequence with an eventual two-out double bringing across the Gamecocks' first run. (6-1, Alabama)
  • B5 | Alabama answered right back, drawing a pair of walks before a Hamiter single through the right side plated one. (7-1, Alabama)
  • T7 | A solo home run led off the seventh for the Gamecocks. (7-2, Alabama)

Postgame Notes

  • Connor Shamblin worked a career-long 6.0 innings in tonight's start. His previous career-high total for innings was 5.1, which he had in his last start against Troy on March 3.
  • Shamblin's 97 pitches are his most in any outing at UA. His previous best was 83 in game two of last season's doubleheader at UNLV on Feb. 21.
  • The six strikeouts for Shamblin tie his career-high total. He has struck out six on two previous occasions, most recently in last Wednesday's start against the Trojans.
  • Hunter Ruth made his Crimson Tide debut in tonight's game.
  • Sam Praytor wrapped up his night with a 1-for-3 effort to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Across that time, the Tide catcher is batting .293 (12-41) with four doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, eight runs, eight walks and a pair of hit-by-pitch.
  • Jim Jarvis saw his hitting streak come to an end at nine games. The sophomore batted .407 (11-27) with a double, one triple, three RBI, six runs, four walks, a pair of hit-by-pitch and a stolen base across the streak.
  • ATTENDANCE: 1,764 (SELLOUT)

Alabama remains at home this weekend and welcomes the Stetson Hatters to The Joe for a three-game set. The series opens on Friday with a 6 p.m. CT start followed by 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. The series is set to wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games of the Tide's final non-conference weekend series can be seen on SEC Network+.
